The Butterfly EmergesI was born without a face. Mother said differently, that the doctors pulled back the caul and there I was, but I know better. She lied a lot. I didn’t like her face much. Tight and small and mean. I caress the girl’s face. Her eyes are blue, large, pretty. “Please,” she whispers. “Please.”The Butterfly Emerges
I pick up the scalpel and start cutting. She starts screaming. It makes it more difficult, the muscles stretching and contorting her skin, but I persevere. When I am done, when she screams no more, I slip her face onto my naked skull and am reborn.

The man in the black coatWhen we were girls our mothers said If we were not good The man in the black coat would come and steal us From our beds And take us by night To be his wife That is what our mothers always said. The man in the black coat
And when we were older we were told The man in the black coat liked proud girls And girls who kissed too much And girls who were bold He was handsome and fine But his eyes burned like nightfire His kisses hard His bed cold.
I am a lovely girl--but not too much And my bread is the best in the village I had a boy named Jack who loved me &nb
